At an early age, Richard was exposed to music as his father was the former percussionist and lead singer of “Chocolate Milk”. Her mother was the owner of a dancing school and so Dawn developed both her dancing and singing skills. As a teenager, she joined the group “Realiti” and was discovered during one of her performances. She was signed under the name Dawn Angelique by Yeah! Brother Records, an independent record label. She created a solo album entitled “Been a While” which was co-produced by Ne-Yo. However, some difficulties with Sean “Diddy” Combs and Bad Boy Records saw the album release delayed . She then toured, doing live performances, and also found work as a cheerleader for the New Orleans Hornets.
In 2005 she auditioned for “Making the Band”, a TV show, and was given the chance to compete for a new girl group managed by Sean Combs. She was released from Yeah! Brother Records and signed with Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment. She, along with Aundrea Fimbres, Wanita Woodgett (D. Woods), Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day would become “Danity Kane”; the group idea came from Dawn who was a fan of comics and manga. As the band went on with their performances, Richard also started to work with various artists such as Cherri V, and then released the song “Phase” which featured Lil Wayne. The band continued to release songs while Dawn worked on an untitled comic book, which was eventually entitled “Danity Kane”.
In 2009, the group split up but Dawn had hoped to continue the band. She then started to work with Sean Combs and Cassie to create “Diddy-Dirt Money”. Dawn became the first member of “Danity Kane” to have released music under a major label after their split. She continued to work on her own mixtape entitled “The Prelude To A Tell Tale Heart”. Dawn then released a few songs, promoting the mixtape and an official studio album. In 2012, she released a promotional single entitled “SMFU (Save Me From U)”, and it came with other songs such as “Black Lipstick” and “Fly”. She continued to promote her songs until the eventual release of the album “Armor On”. The album was said to be a trilogy and she started to work on the second album entitled “GoldenHeart”. This album was released in January 2013, with Dawn releasing it independently. It became number two on the Top Heatseekers Album Chart and number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Chart. She was supposedly going to preview the album “BlackHeart”, the final album of the trilogy, but prioritized the reunion of “Danity Kane”. All the remaining members agreed that they would reunite without Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, and they started to release a few songs, and then Dawn announced the release of “Blackheart”. She is currently working on the album “The Red Era’ and her tour “REDEMPTION”.
For her personal life it is known that Dawn had a relationship with Qwanell Mosley and it lasted for five years. According to her it was his infidelity that broke them up. Dawn is also a vegan and even posed for a PETA ad naked.
